I have been reading a riveting book “Plague Time” by Paul W Ewald. Did you know that some bacteria can change and produce a new generation in 20 minutes? That’s changed enough for the anti-biotic you are currently taking to be less effective. This is one reason why anti-biotics in their current state are not winning the medical world’s war on bacteria. He goes on to say that all pathogens, whether bacteria, viruses, fungi or any other agent that causes disease in us humans, have the ability to ramp up their virulence depending on the speed at which they can infect another host. If the transit time is slow their virulence will be low (they don’t want to kill us off before they can move onto another host) but if they can move quickly they’ll be more virulent. And individual pathogens can alter dependent on the conditions they find themselves in. How clever is that? So Prof Ewald’s theory is that we need to take a new look at how we deal with these pathogens and stop trying to annihilate them with anti-biotics and instead treat them with something that will encourage them to ramp their virulence down to zero in which case we can all live happily every after!

Did you know that your original telomere length is dictated by genetics? And some people are luckier than others in their original hand out? Huh? What’s a telomere? It’s a natty bit of your DNA that unravels every time your DNA replicates and then re-ravels itself – it’s a bit like the plastic bit on the end of your shoe laces that stops them fraying. It protects your chromosomes. Every time it unravels it loses a bit of itself and so shortens and this is linked to your biological age. At some point it can’t unravel any more and that’s when we really start to age. So what can you do? Research show that exercise, reducing stress and good diet gives your telomeres a longer shelf life and this is very good for your biological age. You may be 45 based on your birth certificate but biologically you can be younger or older – this is all down to how you treat that wonderful vehicle you are moving around in. If you want to know what your biological age is you can always as me to test you for it next time you are in for an appointment. Remember, as Jim Rohn said and I repeat: Look after your body, it’s the only place you have to live!

Manners
A person of wisdom and spirituality has very beautiful manners that have grown from genuine respect and love for the whole of humanity. Manners in this sense have nothing to do with culture or education: it is simply a question of humility. When we are at the receiving end of such manners, we feel that some deeper part of us has been honoured. In fact, none of us deserves anything less.
