Hello everyone! I hope you are all having a great start to the week. I can’t believe that tomorrow is the start of October. Goodness, where has this year gone?
So what do I have for you today?
Hot off the press! My next talk is on Diabetes, Syndrome X and Insulin Resistance and will be at Gladstone’s Library, Hawarden on November 12th 7-9pm. If you would like to come and find out how your body handles (or doesn’t!) all the sugars you put into it please let me know – tickets £5 in advance and £10 on the night.
Know you need to exercise but can’t stand the gym?
There is good news! A long, gentle walk is better than an hour a day spent in the gym. It is all about being active – we just need to move more – doesn’t matter how. And the gentle walk was found to be better for insulin sensitivity (needed so you don’t end up with diabetes) and for blood lipid levels (think cholesterol). Those in the study overall sat for 6 hours, walked for 4 and stood for 2 – not continuous!

Cycling or skipping and weight loss?
Researchers have discovered that skipping is far more effective in suppressing appetite than cycling. Both burn off calories but the skipping stops you wanting more food. Who knew?! And a skipping rope is much cheaper than a bike!! If you’re really stuck an old washing line will do. Takes me back to being a kid – maybe that’s part of the attraction – it’ll remind you of fun!!
PMT? You need some iron!
Research reported in America has said that eating apricots, broccoli, sesame seeds and other plants rich in iron can help combat PMT. Let me know how you get on. Oh, and by the way – Popeye was misinformed – spinach is good for you but not high in iron!
Desk bound?
I mentioned this in a previous post but they are now saying that if you sit at a desk for more than 4 hours a day you increase your risk of heart disease and cancer. Obviously if your job is desk bound you can’t give it up completely but try and ensure that you get up every 30 minutes and walk somewhere – loo, get water, anything – just move!
TV Suppers?
If you are watching your weight then don’t watch TV whilst eating – or listen to the radio or read. You need to pay attention to your food – distractions mean you will eat more and pile on the pounds. If you are distracted whilst eating there is a double whammy. You will eat more at the meal you are eating and you will eat more at the next meal because you won’t remember how much you ate at the last one! You need to give yourself time to feel full and satisfied.
Organic Tomatoes – higher in certain healthy nutrients
There has been controversy about whether organic food is higher in nutrients than non-organic and the jury is still out on some foods. Although they are healthier because your body doesn’t have to deal with the pesticides and fungicides that are given off from the food. But research has shown that in the case of tomatoes the organic ones are higher in Vitamin C and other compounds. They think this is because organic tomatoes have to work harder to grow – they are always smaller. So a tough life is good for a tomato! Those non-organic ones just have it too easy!!
Want a clever child?
A large study has shown that if mums take fish oils while pregnant and breast feeding and then the children take fish oils/foods rich in Omega 3 alongside a programme of interactive reading whilst young their IQ scores are always higher. So there you have it – read to your kids and make sure they eat oily fish or take a supplement.
Are calcium supplements good for you?
Short answer is no. Excess calcium is bad for your heart and GP’s have been prescribing calcium for brittle bones for years! As most of you will be aware I am always going on about how vitamins and minerals need to be taken together – they are a family and one helps another out. If you have brittle bones you need to take a complex that contains calcium but is balanced with other nutrients that ensure that there is no strain on the body in using it. Just taking an isolated vitamin or mineral is not the best way of doing it – and in some cases can be downright dangerous. Ask me if you want more help on the best ones for you.
And finally – Thought for the day
We are cups, constantly and quietly being filled. The trick is, knowing how to tip ourselves over and let the beautiful stuff out – Ray Bradbury
