Hello everyone! I hope you have survived the snow – if you live near me wasn’t it amazing?! We had @ 14″ I think – I can’t ever remember having so much snow! We still have quite big drifts here but it is melting and we can actually see the lawn in places.
So what do I have to pass on today? The most exciting thing is my next talk – details below – and the usual snippets of health news. I am also away on holiday from Monday 8th April til Thursday 11th April, working on the Friday 12th April and then off again from 15th to the 19th April. Enjoy the sunshine!

Is it a good idea to think about stressful things that have happened?
One study I’ve seen over the last year actually thought it was as it helped you rationalise what had happened. However another more recent study has said that unfortunately doing this weakens the immune system making people more prone to illness and long term heart disease, cancer and dementia. Thinking about stressful things too much raises the levels of C-reactive protein in the body and the more you think this way the more this level rises. This protein is usually released by the liver as a response to a trauma, injury or infection and short term does a useful job. However long term this is not good as it indicates that there is continued inflammation in your tissues which is not good for anyone. So next time you find yourself dwelling on something stressful change the record and start thinking about something more fun instead!
Can olive oil really help you lose weight?
Another study has given participants yoghurt mixed with a specific amount of olive oil (other participants were given butter, lard (yuk!) and rapeseed oil in their mix) and then looked at their weight, the calories consumed and how quickly they felt full. After 3 months all the participants in the olive oil group had actually naturally reduced their calorie intake by @ 200 calories per day as they felt fuller more quickly than without the olive oil. They did not put on any body fat or increase weight despite the increase of a fat in their diet. The snippet I read did not actually state whether the group actually lost weight but with a reduction of 200 calories per day I would assume that some of them must have. Anyway, another thumbs up for the good old olive oil! Let me know if any of you decide to try it and how you get on!
And finally – I loved this one!! Cats relax listening to meditation music!
Playing yoga music to cats helps them to relax (mine looks pretty relaxed most of the time anyway!) They did the study at a vets with sick cats who are usually quite stressed with being in a cage, in strange surroundings, close to other animals – all things that in usual life they would have some control over. Respiration rates were studied in all cats admitted and 1/2 were played the relaxing music. Those in this group relaxed much quicker and their respiration rates dropped dramatically. I guess that this vets is definitely going to have relaxation music playing in their cattery/surgery area from now on.
Thought for the day – Truth
To follow someone else’s truth is a trap. The best strategy is to know your own truth, face it and live by it. Others may inspire, guide, give you directions, but ultimately you have to cut your own way through the jungle. You could always be asking others where North is, and they will tell you. Someone will say North is this way and someone else that North is that other way – and both would have been sincere. But you alone has to find your true North.
