Hello! Well, here we are only 7 days away from Valentine’s Day. What are you wishing for this year? Whatever it is put that wish out to the universe in a really concrete way – use a journal or visionboard to have pictures of the way you want your day to go. Be really specific – you have much more chance of getting your wish if it is not vague (although if your wish is Brad Pitt then ……. Who know?!!) I have several Valentine’s Day offers below – if you’d like one then do get in touch – or if you’d like someone one to give you one then I suggest you highlight the one and then leave it in a prominent place!!

Does Tamiflu actually work?
If you’ve been reading the papers lately, you have probably seen that Tamiflu has been in the headlines – but not because we are in the midst of flu season, rather because scientists have been challenging Tamiflu’s manufacturer Roche to supply data to show the antiviral actually works as well as they claim it does.
So far, scientists at the Cochrane Collaboration have uncovered data to suggest that Tamiflu has some serious side effects. Further data reveals that Tamiflu “may inhibit the body’s ability to mount a normal immune response to influenza”. Clearly not ideal when the very reason people take the drug is because they believe it will limit the symptoms of flu and help them to recover more quickly.
A major review published last October in the journal Lancet Infectious Diseases concluded that there was only ‘moderate’ evidence for flu vaccine efficacy in healthy adults, and no real evidence of protection in the elderly or children, the two ‘at risk’ groups targeted by vaccination campaigns.
Thankfully, vitamin D provides more protection – and without the side effects. A study published last November in the British Journal of Nutrition found that the higher your blood level of vitamin D, the lower your risk of catching flu or respiratory infections in general. But the levels you need to achieve to confer protection are much higher than diet alone can typically provide. So supplement at least 5000iu a day (ask me to test for the best brand for you), as well as eating oily fish, butter and eggs – and expose your skin to sunshine where you can (although, of course, that’s probably unlikely right now in the midst of a UK winter!)
Ahhh!
Scientists have found that rats are big-hearted! If a rat is showing signs of distress another rat will go to their aid rather than go for food that is being offered. Another reason why we really shouldn’t test on animals – and another sign that animals – even rats! – are more like us emotionally than we thought.
Christmas breathing problems?
Doctors saw a rise of breathing related problems over the Christmas period and it may because of our lovely Christmas trees! Apparently they have mould spores on the pine needles which we then inhale – along with the lovely scent. Symptoms can be fatigue, chest pains, sinus congestion and shortness of breath. They recommend that we hose the tree down before bringing it into the house and then don’t keep it too long afterwards. For those with bronchial conditions maybe an artificial tree is best – just give it a good shake to get rid of any dust! And then use a pine essential oil to get the smell – put the oil on a cotton wool ball and pop it at the base of the tree or behind a radiator and top up regularly.

Looking for an incentive to get fit?
How about choosing a charity and committing to raising money by improving your fitness? Research shows that you are more likely to succeed if you tell lots of other people and commit to help others. The guilt of letting others down is a pretty powerful motivator. (Witness John Bishop and his Comic Relief fitness challenge. The main guy who got John into it has had to pull out so John thought about doing the same – the BBC mentioned that they expected the TV programme and publicity he would generate would probably save 250,000 children’s lives – guess what – he didn’t pull out!) You don’t have to be as extreme as that – you could commit to being able to walk/run so many miles by a certain time, or lose so many inches. (Don’t choose weight loss – as you get fitter you will put on more muscle which weighs heavier than fat! Can be very demoralising!!)
If you don’t have a cause in mind I met a lovely lady Sarah from Claire House on the Wirral and @1/3rd of children they support are from the Cheshire area. Currently they have 2 beds closed because they don’t have the funds and a long waiting list for respite care. Could this be a cause close to your heart? Their website is www.claire-house.org.uk
Feeling that life is just not fair?
Well, you’re right – it isn’t. So accept it and start focusing on what is right in your life. The more you are grateful for what you have and focus on what you want to add to that they more likely you are to get it. For those of you who understand the Law of Attraction you will understand this but to the others of you it is quite simple – the Universe is like a giant supermarket with everything available for you and it will give you exactly what you focus on. So guess what – if you focus on the stuff you don’t like that’s what you’ll get more of. Try it for a week – focus on the good stuff and just let the bad stuff flow by (don’t try and suppress it – just recognise it and then let it go).
And finally – Thought for the day
You’re happiest while you’re making the greatest contribution – Robert F Kennedy
