health-E-news
Hello! Isn’t the weather lovely? Glorious sunshine and slightly nippy – great light for artists I would think! Mother’s Day is fast approaching and if you are looking for inspiration I have 3 specials offers – see below.
New Website
After receiving the last newsletter did you go and have a look at the new website? Please let me know what you think and remember to sign up for the newsletter as within the next couple of months all the newsletters will come via the website. www.petapendlebury.co.uk Thanks.
To Blog or not to Blog?
There is a blog section on the new website – this will be much shorter and updated more regularly than the newsletter – possibly weekly or even a couple of times a week if there is something newsworthy to tell you. At the moment there is no way to sign up to receive these and what I have been doing is posting on the facebook page and through my twitter link. There are 3 options for how this is going to work:
1. I can add an ability to sign up for these in the same way that you do for the monthly newsletters.
2. You can follow me on twitter or facebook to get postings of when I have updated this page.
3. I can send a short notice via the newsletter link to say there is a new post.
Could you please email me and let me know which option you would prefer. Thank you.

Manuka Honey – superhero!
Cardiff University has been doing research regarding the treatment of the superbug MRSA and have found that if you put manuka honey on wounds they can destroy stubborn biofilms which form on wounds that refuse to heal. And if you put the honey on first the biofilms don’t get a chance to form in the first place. And the honey can even tackle MRSA so I would suggest a purchase of a good quality pot of Manuka honey for your store cupboard – not only great on toast!! – but if you end up in hospital smuggle some in and slather it on any wounds if you can!! Also useful if you find yourself a bit peckish in the night!?! Possibly not!
Exercise – are you a non-responder?
If you missed the Horizon programme last week on exercise it’s well worth a look at or you can go to my website and look at last week’s blog which is a short summary of the programme. One thing I forgot to put on the blog (note – must take more fish oils!) is that if you are a non-responder you may not get rid of subcutaneous fat as much as we’d like with exercise (this is the fat just under the skin) but we will get rid of visceral fat (the fat that accumulates around and in our organs – much more dangerous) because exercise increases an enzyme that removes fat from our blood and sticks it in our muscles where it is burnt off. So you may not slim down to a size zero (who on earth wants to be that skinny anyway?!) but you will be fitter and live a much healthier and longer life.
Heartburn drugs raise women’s risk of hip fracture by a third
So says a report in the Daily Telegraph last month. This statistic is for post-menopausal women and if you have been taken the PPI’s (proton pump inhibitors) for longer than 6 years then this risk increases to 50%. This is because these drugs inhibit the absorption of calcium leading to weaker bones. If you stop taking these they said that bone density returned to normal within 2 years. So if you do take these regularly maybe it’s time to find a way of improving your digestion so that you don’t need to take them. There are various things that you can do so please ask for advice.
Certain foods pack on the pounds
American research has shown that French fries and crisps are much worse at piling on the pounds than sugar sweetened soft drinks and unprocessed red meats. Interesting that both of these are potato based and there are some people who intolerant to the deadly nightshade family of which spuds are a member (always something to think about if you have arthritis). I wonder if that is also part of the problem – as well as the fact that there is so much fat on both the products!
Sewing for Pleasure
I know that some of you attended Christi’s last sewing course and really enjoyed it so here are the dates for more of her courses at Gladstone’s Library, Hawarden.
16th March 2012 9.30 – 12.30 – Cushions with Applique
This workshop is designed for people who have used a sewing machine before, possibly made some small items already and would like to take their sewing skills a little further. You will create a design using the technique of appliqué and make it into a cushion to take away.
19th March 2012 9.30 – 12.30 – Simple Cushion Making
This workshop is suitable for people who have never used a sewing machine, have very limited experience or used one many years ago. I will take you through using a sewing machine from the beginning enabling you to gain sufficient skills to make a cushion to take away.
3rd April 2012 9.30 – 12.30 – Simple Cushion Making
This workshop is the same as the workshop on 19th March in content. Being during the Easter School Holidays, it is suitable to be attended by children from Age 10 upwards. This is an ideal opportunity for a parent and child to learn to sew together.
