See you soon, Peta
No Christmas card this year?
I have decided this year not to send out Christmas cards as most of you now have email addresses and to send the money that I would have spent on cards to the RNIB instead. As you know I am an avid reader so the thought of not being able to makes me very sad. The RNIB do a great job in recording books onto CD’s for their members but they always need more money if you’re looking for a charity to support!
Show This Friday – Remember laughter is good for your health!
A client has passed the following on: On Fri 30th Nov at 7pm there is a fabulous, funny show going on at the Theatre John Ambrose at Brynhyfryd School in Ruthin. This is the fourth tour of the show and follows on from a 5 Star run at the Edinburgh Fringe over the summer. The Harmonettes Go Into Orbit features lots of 50’s hits in close harmony, and some great comedy.
Please phone 01824 703933 or 01352 752260 for tickets, or you can buy them at Siop Elfair or the School Office, price £8 and £6. Please support the school – proceeds go to the PTA.
And now some snippets of health news…..
Scientists at Strathclyde University used an extract from green tea on skin cancer tumours and found that 40% of them disappeared! The extract – epigallocatechin gallate – was piggy backed to proteins that carry iron molecules that cancer tumours like and so absorb well. After a month 40% had gone completely and another 30% had shrunk. Unfortunately without the piggy backing no effects were seen so I’m not sure how effective drinking green tea would be in these cases. However, green tea is beneficial to the body so keep drinking 2-3 cups a day and maybe it’ll keep those tumours away in the first place.
High blood pressure? Well, it used to be 140/90 and then some bright spark in the Department of Health decided that 120/80 was better (probably after talking to a lovely pharmaceutical bod – cynical moi?!!) and then linked payment to doctors on reaching certain targets. Anyway, a recent investigation by the Cochrane Collaboration no less (highly respected and independent analysts) have concluded that we are being over-treated because those of us with mild hypertension gains absolutely no benefit from taking medication. The ranges looked at was in the 140-159 and 90-99 range. When you consider that every drug has side effects we really should only be taking those that are really necessary. And mildly elevated blood pressure can be brought down by lifestyle changes very easily. Ask me if you want to know more.
Does your workout work up an appetite? Well, according to researchers in most people it actually does the opposite! They found that 45 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise in the morning actually reduces a person’s motivation for food – and they tested this on women who were both normal weights and clinically obese. They also found that the brain was less likely to respond to food cues and more likely to respond to more activity.
Want to save the planet? We’re all told that showering is better than bathing – not so if you have a power shower. These use on average twice as much energy and water as having a bath so if you like your bath and only have a power shower then stick to your bath and help save the planet and your purse.
Holiday Dates
The clinic will be closed from Friday 21st December until Thursday 3rd January 2013. I hope you all have a brilliant Christmas and a very happy New Year and if you need de-stressing before or after the festivities give me a call!!
