free sugar
Heard a very interesting snippet on the radio news this morning that has finally put some sense into the sugar debate. They are saying that it is only free sugar that is not good for us and this excludes sugar in fruit and in dairy produce. Hallelujah! Finally some sense. It is the sugars that we add to our foods either in the manufacturing process or in our homes that are bad for our bodies and with more research showing that the number one cause of a lot of old age health problems being diabetes we really need to get more of a grip on how much damage we are doing with all this sugar. So read your labels! And don’t forget that sugar can come in many guises such as sucrose, dextrose, HFCS (high fructose corn syrup), glucose and fructose. The last one is actually the sugar from fruit which is fine when it is in the fruit as it is accompanied by lots of nutrients and fibre – it is not so fine when it has been processed and is added as a sweetener to a product. Don’t see it as a chore – make it a game – can you spot the hidden sugars in the foods you eat? Everyone you find and reduce/eliminate is a treat for your body. As the Americans would say – high 5! Have a lovely day, :>)
